I got a Linkedin invitation from someone that I worked with before — and before I knew it, I was recommended some random profiles.

I stumbled across the profile of Juan Ignacio Sierra Margetts and noticed that he was focused on preventing social media addiction in teenagers. I asked him if he might be interested in an e-mail interview, and he agreed. I sent him some questions, and he sent me some answers.

This was my interview with Mr. Margetts. I want to thank him for his time.

According to UK statistics — by the age of 13, around 3/4ths of teenagers have a social media account. Regarding the other ¼ — what stops them from creating an account? Is it financial? Are there teenagers that decide it’s not for them? Please elaborate.

It’s not financial. The cost of having a second-hand smartphone and opening a social media account is very low. This might be one of the most difficult aspects about social media addiction in teenagers. For me, the answer is quite simple.

Some parents have already realized the dangers of social media at an early age, and are basically banning their use. It must be said that teenagers that don’t have social media accounts are often isolated socially because most of their friends have it already.
