Choosing Capitalism Over Compassion
It’s no secret that one of the reasons that Republicans have been able to gain traction in this country is because there are a tremendous amount of white people that believe that minorities are taking their jobs. We know now that this kind of xenophobia doesn’t just apply to the American working class, but extends to the highest political positions in the country.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a Hispanic immigrant or an African-American who obtains a position through affirmative action — politicians and pundits often declare or suggest that we should deny the fact that minorities in America are at a disadvantage. Tucker Carlson, one of the country’s leading conservative voices, has claimed that white supremacy doesn’t exist. He hasn’t faced any significant repercussions as a result, either.
Of course, there are more nuanced takes. Andrew Yang, a presidential candidate that has gained considerable traction over the past few months, has pointed out that it is automation and AI that is affecting manufacturing jobs all across the country more than anything else.
